The Muppet Show: The Star Wars Episode

The Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978 is often considered to be a dark moment in Star Wars history. But there was another event two years later that was just as bad, and makes the average Star Wars fan cringe when they hear about it: the Star Wars episode of the Muppet Show.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the Muppets. I think they are great. But combining two things you like don’t often work out well. It’s like mixing gravy with ice-cream – or eating apple pie with ketchup.

The episode of the Muppet Show aired in 1980, as part of a promotional move for the release of The Empire Strikes Back. For the most part it will make you shudder. While there are some mildly amusing moments during the Pigs in Space segment (though the Miss Piggy and Luke connection has me confused as to whether it’s borderline incest or borderline bestiality), the funniest and best part of the show are the two old codgers making their smart alec remark at the end of the episode.
